Movie Review: Adipurush

Adipurush which translates as First Man, is a retelling of the great epic Ramayana. Prabhas and Kriti are in the lead roles as Ram (Raghav) and Sita (Janaki), while Saif Ali Khan is seen as Ravana. This is a modern take on the age-old epic Ramayana. The mythological story revolves around the abduction of Janaki by Ravana and Raghav’s journey to bring back his wife. A saga of triumph of good over evil is being presented in the film. 

Prabhas kept his charm on the big screen with his performance. He effortlessly carried the picture of Lord Rama without any failure. Truly, he is the center of the film which held everything and everyone united. Emotions portrayed by Prabhas were extraordinary and spectacular. He maintained the lows and highs of the character while adhering to the aura of Lord Rama. His dedication and efforts put life into his character.  

Kriti Sanon as Janaki aced the role with her performance. She carried the picture of calmness and serene throughout the entire story. Her role has justified the description of Sita in the mythological epic. The character of Janaki brought the much-appreciated grace and strength to the film, Adipurush.  

Sunny Singh as Shesh (Laxman) stood up to his role. He blends well with the character of Prabhas as Raghav effortlessly. His character remained loyal to the original one. Laxman, remembered for his utmost loyalty and blazing spirit, is carried by Sunny Singh with utmost originality.  

Saif Ali Khan as Ravana killed the role with his brilliant acting and fiery spirit. Undoubtedly, he has maintained the aura of Ravana and his evilness. His character is responsible for intensity and depth in the film. He brought the seriousness in the story. The grandeur of Ravana is a sight to watch. He is a treat for the eyes as Ravana.  

Other minor characters in Adipurush like Lord Hanuman, Sugreeva, Indrajeet, and Vibhishan played their respective roles while adding the charm to the narrative. Everyone gave a wholesome performance which infused the film with liveliness and authenticity.  

Every character in Adipurush did their best to bring the vision of the director Om Raut to life. This classic tale of Ramayana is a redefined version of the old age story. Director has tried to remain loyal to the original text of the epic without altering the story. But, as we all understand, the concept of cinema is to entertain the public. So, there are elements added to the story to make it worth 3 hours of the public.  

The triumph of good over evil. 

The comic elements, witty and funny dialogues, and VFX are added to make it livelier and more interesting. In this way, viewers were able to connect and understand the concept of Ramayana. As the times are changing so are the people’s preferences. The upcoming generation doesn’t want to stick to the old ways of storytelling and narration. With the progressive times their thought process is also progressing and therefore they’re more likely to have interest in the modern age of VFX, three dimensions, and witty dialogues.  

Adipurush, is a perfect adaptation in terms of changing times and modernism. Children nowadays are not aware of their mythologies because they lack interest in watching long episodes of classical tales and reading books. They quickly learn and show interest in the animation and a type of narration they feel related to. It is a way in which children and youngsters can learn how empowering good and truth are and evil can never succeed. 

The music and songs are an added charm of the movie. Every song and tunes are top-notch. The background music has been captivating and attention grabbing. Music composers have done remarkable jobs here. Every word, every tune, every beat has captured the essence of the story.  

Adipurush is much more than a retelling of Ramayana. It is a celebration of our history and culture which is somewhere we are all leaving behind. It is a way to make the next generation with our cultural history and traditions. It is a celebration of love and loyalty. The triumph of good over evil. A short and crisp retelling of morality, humanity, and a guide for everyone to walk on the right path is what defines Adipurush the best.  

Disclaimer of the film was reasonable in terms of its adaptation. As it was clearly mentioned there that it is a cinematic adaptation and necessary changes have been made while keeping the idea of entertainment in mind. Every dialogue; including the character of Lord Hanuman and representation of Ravana’s Lanka as black; a symbol of darkness is shown as such to highlight the concept of darkness and light. How can truth guide you to the light? If these measures weren’t taken while making the film, then it would have been impossible to complete the story in 3 hours. 

Despite the mixed responses from the audience and critics, Adipurush is performing well in the theatres as people are loving the extraordinary effortless performance of Prabhas as a picture of goodness and Saif Ali Khan as the face of evil. It has become the third biggest opening of this year so far with an approximate earning of Rs 150 cr.  

Om Raut’s vision is absolutely praise worthy as it is a cinematic marvel. He has justified the adaptation by remaining faithful to the original tale. Everything seems to be perfectly placed together to give the audience an ethereal experience through Adipurush. If the movie hadn’t had all those witty dialogues and scenes, then it would’ve bored the audience as everyone is already familiar with the story. This was an attempt to visualize the story in a different manner while portraying the similar ideology that is good over evil.
